Subaru Engine Teardown - Process and Pics

What does a Subaru engine teardown look like? Pretty similar to this!

This was a JDM WRX engine that a customer brought to us for a full engine teardown to diagnose what the issue was. Our tech started by pulling the heads and dis-assembling them to inspect each part for wear and issues. We use Subaru specs to measure tolerances to verify everything is where it needs to be and working properly. We also inspect bearing surfaces for any abnormal wear, pitting or scoring, which would indicate bad oiling and require polishing or replacement.

Next up is the block. The block is town down to individual components and each one is inspected for any abnormal signs of wear. Each piece is laid out in order, bolts and studs are labeled and kept aside. Most stock parts can be re-used if desired, so keeping everything labeled and sorted is important.

This particular engine had a bad rod bearing, which resulted in the dreaded “rod knock”.   We measured the tolerances on the road and bearing, as well as the crank, and it was determined that the rod was not salvageable and at minimum a new rod and bearing would be needed for a proper rebuild.
